Amamelia announces vinyl LP ‘Bananamelia!’, shares new song ‘Gap Selection’

Amamelia is the musical project of Amelia Berry (she/her), a musician and songwriter currently based in Tāmaki Makaurau. Amamelia’s music combines breaks normally found in Jungle & Drum & Bass with a sugary synthetic pop sensibility.
Today Amamelia shares the new downtempo track Gap Selection, the first single off her long awaited sophomore album Bananamelia! (released digitally and Vinyl LP on November 3 via Sunreturn).

Released digitally on August 11
Bananamelia! is an album split into two suites of songs. Gap Selection is the beginning of the latter, kicking off side B of the vinyl record. The fitful song is infectiously groovy, mixing smooth strings with crisp chimes.
“Gap Selection‘s title is a driving thing,” says Berry. “I have had my restricted licence test cancelled a few times due to the pandemic, and I’ve had to learn about the old gap selection more than my fair share. It’s kind of a play on the way the track stops and starts, getting a lot of its drama and variation out of stopping and starting kinda out of the blue.”
“Gap Selection was built off of a sample from Marble Run (Track 1 on Bananamelia!). I wanted to take it down from the 160bgm jungle tempo to transform it into something like a mid 90s downtempo track a la Yoshinori Sunahara or something from the Ninja Tune catalogue. “
Reflecting on the song, Berry says “I had a lot of fun putting together the synth lead, recreating that 70s via 90s raw analog sound on an old Jen SX-1000, going through the part twice and “playing” the portmanteau time to get the kind of weird variable detune thing going on.”
