Black Comet Return with New Single ‘My Prerogative’

Black Comet have returned with their new single My Prerogative. The track marks the band’s first release of 2026, following a run of recent live shows that has seen them continue to build momentum across Aotearoa.
A cover of the classic Bobby Brown track, Black Comet’s take on My Prerogative flips the song into their own world, adding a galactic funk twist and the unmistakable energy of a band known for pushing genre boundaries. Led by Laughton Kora, Black Comet bring together funk, rock, soul, psychedelic textures and deep rhythmic energy, reshaping the track through their own expansive lens.
My Prerogative arrives after a strong live period for the band, including support slots for the legendary Thundercat at his sold-out Auckland show, and frequent-collaborator Troy Kingi. That live energy sits at the heart of Black Comet’s world, with the group known for performances that move between precision, improvisation and full-force release.
“My Prerogative is a tune that we’ve been jamming for a while. We just love how groovy and funky it is, so we’ve put our spin on it. When Black Comet is playing, it’s all about the groove for us, and this track really captures that feel.” – Laughton Kora
As their first new music for the year, My Prerogative opens the next chapter for Black Comet, setting the tone for more music to follow. Bold, groove-led and unmistakably their own, the single captures the confidence of a band continuing to push forward on their own terms.
