Deva Mahal turns up the heat on her new slow-burning ballad, ‘Need’

APRA Silver Scroll nominee Deva Mahal is officially in her ‘soft girl’ era, as she drops another sizzling hot R&B ballad, Need.

Sensual and slow-burning, Need is the perfect follow up to Deva’s recently released South Coast featuring Estère, which has been nominated for Aotearoa’s prestigious Silver Scroll Awards, recognising excellence in songwriting.
Need captures that universal desire for connection and to feel ecstasy. “It doesn’t matter who you are, what you look like or how you identify, everyone shares this need,” says Deva.
The Te Whanganui-a-Tara-based powerhouse worked with Wellington (but now London-based) artist and producer Ashton Sellars and Ōtautahi-born producer, musician and songwriter, Chris Wethey, to bring Need to life. “We were in the Rudimental studio and this track just came out. The production just flowed. Sometimes the connection with someone feels like you both knew each other in a past life. The pull towards each other is undeniable and can’t be stopped.”
Deva also worked with a talented cast of creatives – Dana Leaming (Co-Director), Ashley Roworth (Producer), Bill Bycroft (DOP) and Rob Kerr (Lighting) – on the video for Need, which depicts the notion that desire and the need for intimacy and touch is something that connects everyone. “Different faces. Different bodies. Different preferences. It is innately human.”
