Emma Rutherford Brings Original Show to BATS Theatre This July

After years of chasing a music dream, Emma Rutherford faces the question every creative person eventually hears “have you thought about going teaching?”

Following the success of her 2026 singles Losing Sight (#18 on the Hot 20 Aotearoa Music Charts) and Gracie (#3 on the Hot 20 Aotearoa Music Charts; Rolling Stone AU/NZ “Best NZ Music of the Week”). Emma is stepping away from the bar gig scene to debut her original show In Between The Verses at BATS Theatre this July.

Written, directed and performed by Emma Rutherford and supported by pianist Ben Kelly, In Between The Verses blends original music, storytelling, comedy and small town wisdom, unpacking what it means to be an artist in Aotearoa when everyone around you has a “real job”.

Originally from a rural North Canterbury town where everyone knows everyone, Emma packed up her life, her microphone and a truckload of unsolicited advice to chase the near impossible dream of making it in the music industry.

Following its BATS Theatre season, Emma plans to tour In Between The Verses across Aotearoa over summer.
