Scabadart Announces Debut Album ‘Urban Geography’
After building an audience as a selector, Scabadart’s first full-length release represents 3 years of songwriting, recording, and artistic development.
Blending a myriad of influences, atmospheric production, and storytelling through instrumental music: Urban Geography is Scab’s “hello, world”.
Recently relocated to Pōneke Wellington, the album was written in Ōtautahi and mastered at Saltbox Studios.
“I moved from Perth to Wellington when I was 18, then Christchurch not long after that. For a while I felt very isolated, and there were a lot of emotions at that time. A lot of these feelings I wouldn’t know how to put into words, so I put them into music instead. It was an escape for me. That feeling of escape is what I’m trying to capture. I want the listener to close their eyes and be somewhere else.”
Unapologetically expressive and diverse, the album touches on Drum & Bass, Downtempo, Hip-Hop, Big Beat, and Jungle, with lo-fi and Future Bass imbued throughout.
Emotive above all, Scab has a knack for building soundscapes that shift the listener into the otherworldly atmospheres he’s created.
Scab quotes the following artists as instrumental influences: 2nd exit, Fox Stevenson, The Gaslamp Killer, Venetian Snares, Easy Life, Lausse the Cat, Arlo Parks, WRLD, Grant, SOFY, and Jean-Michel Jarre.
