Sub-Tribe return with single ‘For The Land’
Rising Pacific bass heavyweights Sub-Tribe return with For The Land, the follow-up single to Te Waka.
Taken from their forthcoming Mana EP, For The Land marks a bold sonic evolution for the group, blending a modern Afro-future R&B soundscape with an urgent message of environmental guardianship, kaitiakitanga and ancestral wisdom.
Where previous releases leaned into heavy roots-reggae and dancehall rhythms, For The Land showcases the versatility and musicality of Sub-Tribe, with the band exploring a marriage of Afro rhythms, R&B melody and their signature bass-heavy frequency.
Lyrically, For The Land acknowledges the sacred, reciprocal bond between people and the earth. Anchored in the group’s heritage and use of te reo Māori, the song opens with atmospheric dialogue honouring the natural world, acknowledging Papatūānuku, Tāne Mahuta and Tangaroa. The hook, “Ka whakahoki mai te whenua (the land returns / gives back)”, sits at the heart of the track, while vocalist Rayjah45 delivers a fast-paced verse that adds raw sound-system energy.
For The Land urges listeners to reject the anxieties of the modern city high and look after the ecosystem for the rangatahi. It is an uplifting reminder that the path forward relies on education, open kōrero and collective inspiration.
