The Mentalist Collective Release New Single ‘E Rere’

Ōtepoti-based ensemble The Mentalist Collective announce the release of their powerful new single, E Rere, a deeply personal and culturally resonant work written by Danie Urquhart with support from Lorraine Johnston and Hana Mereraiha.
E Rere is a journey of self-discovery, exploring identity, reconnection, and belonging after generations of lost language and culture. The song follows Urquhart as she reconnects with her family’s past and reflects on previous generations’ disconnection from Te Ao Māori.
E Rere gives voice to the experience of feeling suspended between worlds while searching for cultural grounding.

The single was recorded and produced in spring 2025 at the University of Otago’s Te Korokoro o te Tūī recording suite by Hugh Harlow. The accompanying music video, directed by Stephen Hillman, was filmed across significant South Island locations – including the Waihao River, Kelceys Bush, Kurow, and Chingford Park – grounding the project within the landscapes that shape its narrative.
The project was made possible with support from NZ On Air and Te Māngai Pāho.
