Friday Night at Nivara: Auckland Heavyweights Hit Hamilton Ahead of Homegrown

Hamilton’s long-running underground venue Nivara Lounge hosts a late-night heavy music lineup tonight, offering visitors arriving early for Jim Beam Homegrown Festival a chance to experience one of the city’s most iconic live music rooms before it closes later this year.

The bill features Auckland musicians Master Frank Fu, performing alongside guitarist Gideon Voon and drummer Corey Friedlander, with Hamilton heavy-punk band The Vile Maxim opening the night.

For nearly three decades, Nivara Lounge has been a cornerstone of Hamilton’s live music community. Since opening in 1997, the basement venue on Victoria Street has hosted thousands of shows across punk, metal, jazz, experimental and underground scenes, becoming a rite of passage for touring bands and local artists alike.

Although the venue will close when the building is eventually redeveloped, the stage is far from quiet. A full run of gigs is still scheduled in the months ahead, and audiences are encouraged to follow the venue’s Facebook page to keep up with upcoming shows and farewell events.

Tonight’s lineup brings together some of Aotearoa’s most technically accomplished heavy players.

Master Frank Fu’s performance blends fast, technical heavy music with martial-arts-influenced stage movement, turning their live show into something as physical as it is musical. Drawing from musicians connected to bands such as House of Ousey and Stormforge, the group’s approach treats the stage as part of the instrument itself.

Voon and Friedlander deliver a stripped-back instrumental set built around intricate guitar work, precise riffing and complex rhythmic arrangements. Their recently released single Ancient Promise showcases the pair’s mix of technical metal and dynamic groove.

Friedlander is widely recognised across the Aotearoa metal scene for his work with 8 Foot Sativa, City of Souls, In Dread Response and his current role in Shepherds Reign. Voon’s work with Shepherds Reign has helped carry the South Auckland band to international stages alongside acts such as The Hu and Disturbed.

Opening the night are Hamilton locals The Vile Maxim, a heavy punk four-piece known for chaotic live shows and a sound rooted deep in the Waikato underground.

With many music fans already travelling to Hamilton for Saturday’s Homegrown festival, the Friday night show offers a chance to start the weekend early – and experience one of the city’s most storied venues while its stage is still active.
