Hoodaki Set To Rock Dunedin Tonight

For one night only, Hoodaki are heading to Dunedin to share the stage with their old friends, Dancefloorguru. It promises to be an awesome night of Alt-Indie energy as these two acts combine forces for a masterclass in southern rock.

From the rain-slicked streets of 1980’s Manchester to the heart of the Manchester of the South, Hoodaki have completed a decades-long evolution from high-energy covers to Southland’s premier original rock outfit.

The journey began with frontman Jago Byatt in the UK’s thriving indie scene, eventually transplanting that gritty British sensibility to Invercargill. What started as a fun-time covers band among teaching colleagues – including fellow Englishman Paul Burrows – has since transformed into a formidable four-piece powerhouse.

With the addition of local drummer Brendan Monaghan and the recent recruitment of local legend Leon Wilks on guitar and vocals, Hoodaki has traded the safety of the pub-standard for their own brand of Dad Rock – a self-aware nod to the Alt, Indie, and Punk influences of their youth.

Audiences can expect complex arrangements, soaring harmonies, and raw, honest energy. Whether it’s the crowd-favourite anthem John the Dog or their latest unreleased material, Hoodaki proves that original music is alive and kicking in the deep south.

Local muso Regan Bennett will also return with 3-piece original act Dancefloorguru to share a high energy dance orientated fusion of original rock, ska and funky reggae. Following a long absence from Dunedin, the band, including Nik Lucka and Tony McDermott look forward to catching up with friends, old fans and attracting some new interest, sharing material from their self titled original album and new material to test the dancefloor.

The original album was likened to David Byrne at a dub festival dragged onstage with the Electro 6. The bands new material continues to combine an element of story telling in the lyrical content, on top of the solid groves the band is best known for.
