Abstract Fish Lungs’ debut EP Tribute IV is a collection of songs written and performed by founding members Josh Alexander (lead vocals, guitar), Wai Ariki Tepania (lead guitar, backing vocals), Lily Lye (drums), and Hendrix Knox (bass) between 2024/25. Funded in part by the prize money from their 2024 Smokefree Rockquest success and recorded at The Porch studio in Hamilton, the release serves as a bridge between the band’s origins and the end of its first era, with drummer Lily’s departure to go travelling.

The EP takes listeners on an intentional journey, seamlessly blending soaring, melodic vocal hooks with the crushing weight of headbanging riffs. Moving beyond the traditional confines of hard rock, the band occupies a unique sonic space between Nu-Metal and Metalcore – a refined, melodic evolution of the genre.

While the tracks feature thought-provoking and powerful lyrical themes, it’s balanced by raw intensity and angelic melodies. Fans can expect the band’s signature “breakdowns,” where strategic metal screams amplify the emotional core of each song – an energy that has already made their live performances a must-see event.

Plans for 2026 include recording their debut 11-song album The Bleak Mid-Winter due for release in October 2026, and to continue expanding their live performances with new drummer Ethan Murray.
